In the world, supernatural creatures exist. No one denies it. Vampire movies aren't as light-hearted, werewolves are an actual worry, ghosts are real without question. However, still reigning as "top species," humans tend to be very cruel to the supernatural beings. Lately it has become slightly more common that a supernatural child comes from a pretty good human home. It's still pretty rare, especially without the genes to encourage it, but occasionally a supernatural being will be born of human parents. Typically when that happens, the supernatural child is neglected at best and abused at worst. Scouts from Otherworld Academy work tirelessly to find supernatural kids and bring them to their academy.
Although most supernatural kids are only one type of supernatural creature, occasionally they are a hybrid of more than one. Sadly, the most common mix is one species and a ghost. Another common one is werewolf/vampire, though not as much, and usually these children are more troubled due to the symptoms of their species blend.
~~OTHERWORLD ACADEMY
Set in an unknown spot in Antarctica, Otherworld Academy is a prestigious academy that is home to supernatural beings. The mostly underground structure was built in mid 1800s, and is constantly building additions, and serves not only as a school to teach young supernaturals, but also as protection for supernatural beings from humans. The academy is a complete secret from humans, except towards the few kids lucky enough to have loving human parents.
The above-ground part of the building blends in perfectly with the white scenery surrounding it. Tourists and researchers often stumble past it, assuming it's just another mountain of snow and glacier. Although it's not forbidden, the school does try to keep students inside as much as possible. The building is temperature controlled, and as the years went on, old students that have come back to work at the academy have been updating the building since its creation, cycling through as Headmasters and supervisors. The most recent addition was finding a way to add wifi to the building while still keeping it undetectable from researchers.
The academy mostly has students between the ages of 11-21, but it's not uncommon to have younger or older (ex-)students, either due to having no place to go, or wanting to stay to help somewhere within the academy. The building is almost constantly being added upon, and architects and construction workers are always needed at the academy. There are also always open positions for scouters, since the world is very large and supernaturals can be born on any continent. And, being such a monotone part of the world, artists and entertainers are also always welcomed, so students and teachers alike won't get cabin fever being stuck inside all day.
Otherworld Academy boasts having the kind of classes you'd expect: math, science, languages, but also has a few, more unique classes. All species are separated in order to attend a class on controlling whatever powers they may have, or how to control the supernatural part of themselves in general. There is also a class for learning to live in the human world, but a lot of students are reluctant to return after what they've faced around humans. Another lot of ex-students leave the academy only to return later, tired of the human world. The school's official language is English, but since they are an extremely diverse population, students usually will have the option to take courses in their native language and learn English on the side.
Their supplies come from scouters returning to the school, though there is also a team specifically dedicated to collecting necessary food and hobby items. Students that can obtain money can pay for specific items, either by ordering them from the internet and having them sent to an established P.O Box, or asking the scouters directly to get them a certain item. Most of the oldest students are given a small amount of pay if they decide to help somewhere within the academy (most commonly is the dish room, table set up and break down, etc). The academy takes great lengths to make sure everything and anything brought into the school is safe for everyone, so sometimes students won't always get what they want.
~~LIVING QUARTERS
The living quarters for the academy is split into two different categories: dorm rooms for the students, and studio apartments for the staff that live on campus. The only exception is the headmaster's living quarters, as he had it turned into a one bedroom so he and his wife could live together.
The dorm rooms are typically 1-3 students per room, with solo rooms being more available after age 18, but special circumstances can be made for students that may need it. Nearly all dorms have roommates selected at random, usually encouraging different species as roommates, but students are allowed to request friends. Every dorm shares a (fair-sized) bathroom with the dorm room directly adjacent to it. In the dorm room is a pair of desks, a pair of beds (sometimes one set of bunk beds for the three-person dorms), and a closet with a dresser. There is also a small sink and counter set up (typically by the doors) for students that want to cook in their dorm. Students are allowed a mini-small fridge, and a camping stove (this privilege will be revoked if a student causes too much chaos with the stove). However, candles are not allowed, as well as weapons (obviously). If the students really can't get along, the staff will (usually) work to let them switch.
The staff all have solo studio apartment-like rooms. A bed is the only piece of furniture that comes with it, but the staff are free to bring in as much furniture and clutter as they want. They have solo bathrooms as well. There is usually a small sectioned-out portion of the studio that has a kitchen set up; though everything typically runs a bit small. Unlike the student dorms though, there is a full kitchen, with an oven, stove, microwave, sink, and refrigerator.
Scouters and messengers are occasionally sent on a mission to bring in upgraded appliances, though it's not extremely often as discreetly shipping a bunch of giant things, such as refrigerators, to Antarctica is not an easily hidden task. Students and staff alike are free to purchase these items at a heavily lowered price than in a store if they wish.
