NOTE: Although the academy acknowledges sometimes people just want to be with their own kind, they highly encourage mingling not only between species, but also between countries.
Vampires are one of the few supernatural students that are thankful for the academy being underground, and Antarctica being dark half the year. Although they won't turn into ashes and die when exposed to sunlight as movies suggest, they are extremely sensitive to sunlight and can get serious burns from it (which can indirectly cause death). They also have a dislike of garlic, though again, for most it won't kill them, but will give them a varying degree of an allergy-like reaction (which can also potentially result in a small case of death). They are also one of the few, if not the only, species among the students that get cabin fever less easily.
A stake of any kind through the heart would kill anyone, and vampires are no exception. They can see themselves in mirrors, though it didn't used to be the case, and only some of them still have an aversion to silver (certain bloodlines/races). Since they're immortals, vampires are typically placed in the dormitory equivalent to their perceived age if necessary, and then kept in one age's dormitory for about five years before being moved up. If they were born vampires and are still growing, they will be moved up to correlate with the age they currently appear. Outside of the academy, vampires typically go for graveyard shifts (for obvious reasons) anywhere they can and try to keep a low profile. They are free to eat regular food at will, but it won't do anything for them and so they do require blood to maintain their life. Their fangs are always present, and their appearance could pass as human if they don't smile too widely. They will not age, but they can (non-magically) change their appearance and it will stay (dying their hair, getting tattoos, etc).
Vampires born as such will age normally until they get to about 18-21 in appearance, 150 in their actual age. Until then, vampires can grow at different rates; one may be only 80 and already look close to 18, while another can be close to 140 and still look 13. Their powers come into play the same as with a turned vampire, with the only exception that birthed-vampires don't have enhanced senses for the first two years.
Most new vampires go through a phase after first being turned where they have an insatiable blood lust, but if they're brought to the academy at that time, they are usually quarantined and given a personal blood bank. Children born of vampires will not have this blood lust. Most vampires that have killed humans for blood and been caught have been sentenced to death, and among the supernatural community are highly frowned upon.
Vampires do possess powers, though some depend on their age. Even if they're just turned, a vampire's senses become enhanced. They can see perfectly, even in pitch black. After about 15 years, they can move at super speed. After about 100 years, they can transform into a bat and fly, though with the state of the world versus supernaturals, there is a rather small population of 100+ year old vampires. Most, if lucky, will survive the length of an average human lifespan. (However, there is a disproportionally larger population of 100+ year old vampires at the academy, simply because it is a safe place. A lot of them decide to go into teaching.)
Hybrid vampires will only get heightened senses and, if lucky, super speed. They tend to either not be able to be in sunlight for long periods of time or at the very least have a sensitivity to it. Some are allergic to garlic while others can eat it fine. Although their bodies want blood, hybrids can't digest it properly.
So far, a majority of were-creatures found in the world have been either werewolves or were-cats, typically taking the form of a breed of big cat, and the occasional were-fox, and rarely a completely different animal. While the most common type is werewolves, there is no shortage of were-cats, and other were-creatures are climbing in population lately. When they transform, they completely look like the animal, just a bit bigger. They are forced into a usually painful transformation on the full moon, as to which they are usually locked in their designated room (not required, though being locked in somewhere is), where they play and occasionally fight throughout the night, and on those nights are the only times they don't remember what they did while in animal form. Outside of the nights of the full moon, they have to occasionally change into their animal form to keep their "animal persona" at bay. They always have heightened senses, and they tend to be a bit more carnivorous than the other students ("veganism/vegetarianism" is a typically joke to them, but ironically also not unheard of). Some argue they have a sort of multiple personality disorder, since they seem to have a humanistic side to them as well as an animalistic side (And also some just actually do have the disorder, were's usually get it at a slightly higher rate than average). As it gets closer to the full moon, most of the were-creatures are infamous for getting more rowdy and fighting more often, though they rarely get into serious/bloody fights.
After about five years, the pain of transformation mostly subsides. Were-creatures tend to have shorter lifespans than most others, as it seems their animal and human side end up clashing in terms of aging. The typical lifespan of a were-creature is about 20-30 years after they've been bit. The only exception is when they are born a were-creature, as to which they tend to live about 60-70 years. Silver is a common weapon against them, and humans have been known to use silver as punishments against criminal werewolves.
Children of mixed breeds (werewolf vs were-cat, etc) have a random genetic lottery in terms of which animal they will become. More often than not, the mixed breeds can create up to four generations of the family to potentially be one of the animals of the mixed couple.
Hybrids (any except were-ghost) will not be forced into transformation, but will have chronic bodily pain that intensifies around the full moon that do not fade with time, as well as strong meat cravings. Usually, though not all the time, they also get heightened senses. A majority of the time, silver still affects hybrid weres, though like with hybrid vampires, it can vary to a certain degree.
Ghosts are the sad stories of the supernatural creatures. Although there's been research, there hasn't been a consistent reason for people to become a ghost rather than pass away normally. The only consistency all ghosts have is that they had a highly traumatic death, but even so, not all trauma victims become ghosts. All ghosts can phase through walls and float, but they need training in order to do that. It also takes practice to be able to hold things/people again, but not as much as floating or phasing through walls. Like vampires, they are immortal and therefore are sent to the next dorm after about five years. Humans have yet to find out how to "kill" them, but are finding more and more ways to torture them, or at the very least chase them away. Ghosts are the one of the supernatural species that can't be randomly born of human parents, and one can only become a ghost if they've died.
They are much lighter in weight than one would expect, usually ranging between 50-100 lbs (22-45 kg) lighter than they would be if they were still alive. Some are even lighter or, more rarely, heavier than average.
They are free to do usual human activities as they wish (eat, drink, shower, etc), but it is not necessary towards their survival. However, they can still taste things, and the ghosts have a reputation for being some of the heaviest drinkers in the Academy, even though they can very rarely actually get drunk. Ghosts are also the only species that cannot change their appearance at will (dye/cut their hair, etc), and look the same as they did when they died. They have the ability to age up, which is popular among ghosts that died young, but they cannot go backwards in age once they've done so. They can also change their clothes if they wish, and ghosts can also learn to hide whatever they went through that caused their death in order to look like a healthy person (informally called "facade"). However, that skill also takes learning, and often times ghosts will accidentally scare their roommates by letting their facade drop. They can also possess others, but it's highly frowned upon in the Academy, and they will be given strict punishment for doing so, especially for selfish purposes.
Ghosts are the most commonly chosen to become the architects and construction workers of the school, as temperature does not affect them as it does the others. Another option for them is to become scouts, since they can become invisible and easily phase through the walls of people's homes.
Ghosts are the most common hybrids,* though they aren't called as such colloquially unless the child is actually born to a ghost and other supernatural. Ghost abilities actually blend somewhat seamlessly with the other supernatural's abilities, but the requirements of that species becomes void. For example, a werewolf that dies and becomes a ghost can still transform, but isn't required to. A vampire that died will still have the powers of their respective age, but they won't need blood. For some were-ghosts, they can go thousands of years before learning they can still transform, as it's not a commonly discussed subject.
Ghosts are a supernatural species that can not breed if it is just a ghost couple. It is still very rare, but some ghost hybrids have been born of a ghost/other species couple.
*Note: not all ghosts are hybrids. Humans that have died and become ghosts are also welcome in the academy.
(Note: it's not required, but using a blur tool or soft focus lens when editing pictures can give the picture a more "ghost-like" look. [See Jungshin Kim for an example])
Fae and Fairies are very often lumped together at the academy for convenience, and out of ignorance among most humans. Both of the species are notorious for pulling pranks, both among humans and within the academy walls. Although school rules have mostly limited the pranks to relatively harmless jokes, the fae students still sometimes get away with a bit too much. Although they have a slowed aging process, they are usually leveled up in grades and dorms each year regardless of their actual age (special circumstances do apply if the student and school feel it is necessary).
Fairies are still mischievous, but not quite as malicious as Fae. They are known to have an almost unnatural beauty to them.
They both are able to manipulate others, but the students are banned from doing so, and if there is word that someone is using their manipulation powers, they will get suspended to an empty corridor for a certain amount of time (as sending them to the human world is practically a death wish for any supernatural being, this is the next best option). They sometimes have alternative psychic abilities that can vary vastly, and while it's not rare, it's not super common. Both are also very skilled with nature, and are known to get along best when tending to the academy's gardens. More often than not, they tend to be vegetarians.
Fae/Fairy hybrids usually will gain the other species' power as fae/fairy powers tend to be pretty weak, second only to Elves. Occasionally, fae/fairy hybrids will inherit psychic abilities.
Elves can live for centuries, but their aging process slows as they get older, rather than an immediate slowed aging process. Therefore, they are treated like the fae and fairies, and are aged up each year regardless. Elves are the supernaturals most commonly born to humans, though science cannot figure out why that is. They tend to be very law abiding by default, and often once they age out of the classes, are often given jobs as school security guards, because of their ability to easily bond to even the wildest of animals, and so they are able to calm irate were-creatures, and detect magic being used, therefore watching out for troublesome fae. They are probably the most accepted supernatural creature among humans, though there is still a lot of negativity towards them; it is just definitely less prominent than other species. They are naturally skilled at hand to hand combat, but most of the elven students are typically pacifists, some because of their pasts, others just because they don't feel like fighting. Elves have the easiest time returning to their home continents, so the elven population in the academy is not representative of the world's elven population.
Although they have the pointy ears typically associated with elves, they can chose to hide them, though it is a learned ability.
Hybrids will typically adopt most of the other species' powers, as the elven powers are one of the weakest in terms of probability to obtain it.
Merpeople are not as common at the academy, simply because the scouts are looking on land for supernaturals rather than in water.
However, that doesn't mean there aren't any in the school. They are given special dorms, attached to a water heater that filters proper-temperature sea water through the room. Although they are able to transform their fins into legs, a lot of the Merpeople in the school keep to themselves. Most of the Merpeople at the academy were caught by fisherman, some kept as entertainment for humans, others narrowly missing fishing spears and that photo fisherman always take of big or important catches.
Merpeople outside the school walls do like to play with the minds of fishermen, leading them down to their deaths, just for fun. But it is forbidden within the academy. The merpeople almost always have beautiful singing voices. They are the only supernatural species who's hair can come naturally in shade of blues and greens. When they use their human legs, they can easily pass as human, but they cannot be out of sea water longer than 48 hours. If they go over three days without sea water, they can die.
Hybrids among mermaids, besides ghosts, are extremely rare. Of the hybrids that have been found, most of the children did not have, and could not form, fins, but they could hold their breath underwater for an astounding amount of time and also go deeper into the depths of the ocean than any human could even dream.
Usually either the child of two species or an unfortunate accident of a supernatural turned by a different species, hybrids, although becoming more common, are still rather rare.
A hybrid that is, for some reason, rising in popularity, though also a rather unfortunate one, is a vampire and were-creature hybrid (known colloquially as "werevamp hybrids" and derogatorily called "mutts"). For whatever reason, when these two species mix, the hybrid child will almost always be mentally unstable, with some having a wide variety of mental illnesses. Vampire/Were-creature hybrids are the most commonly caught supernatural beings in terms of criminals, and they tend to cause almost as much, if not more, trouble than the fae. Miscarriages and still births are also much more common, as are stories of the children being abandoned, among this particular mix. Much, much less commonly, a child born to either vampire or were-creature parents is bitten and turned by the other species, but most of either species try to avoid creating the demon that occurs from the mix. It is theorized it was vampire/were-creature hybrids that caused humans to hate all supernatural creatures, but there is no solid proof of it. There has been plenty of research, both by humans and the academy alike (with the academy overseeing more humane testing), trying to figure out why this mix is so dangerous for the child, but very little answers have come forth. They are statistically highly more likely to die by either human hands or suicide, and have a disproportionally low life expectancy when compared to other supernaturals. The average vampire/were-creature hybrid will live about 10-15 years after being turned into a hybrid, or 25-30 years if born a hybrid, though with intervention and help the number rises a significant amount. The current headmaster is, so far, one of the known oldest living hybrids. They are the only ones among the supernatural beings that cannot, under any known circumstances, have offspring.
Some theorize the constant hunger of needing blood and meat, but not being able to properly digest either to the needs of the were-creature or vampire, is the cause for the hybrid's bizarre behavior. They also cannot become their were-creature, and therefore another theory for their bizarre behavior is the animal is trying to escape. The only consistent symptom every werevamp has is chronic pain all along their body (mostly in the bones), also theorized to be their were-creature side trying to get out. Depending on their temperaments, they are kept under a careful watch, but they are allowed in school. Not all of them are necessarily evil, but even the seemingly most innocent ones will find ways to at the very least pull pranks. Oddly enough, they are also the only species known to inherit quite the opposite of what almost all hybrids obtain or keep, heighten senses, and are the most common supernatural born being either be blind or deaf. They inherit fangs, and though they're not as long as a vampire's, they are longer than human's canine teeth. The majority of them can also can be severely injured by silver, and are usually, though not always, sensitive to sun and garlic.
Usually, even if a job can't be found for a vampire/were-creature hybrid, they are kept at the school for safe keeping and to watch over them (and usually to keep them busy, they are given menial tasks like dishes or janitorial work).
Witches are another supernatural not born to pure humans, but they are the ones that blend in the most seamlessly with them. Becoming more discreet after the Salem Witch Trials, witches have essentially lived "undercover" to protect their livelihoods. Not needing wands, witches are typically taught to harness their powers from a young age. They can learn spells, usually from parents, and potions, usually from both parents and books. Typically, this gene is passed down through females, but male witches are nowhere near unheard of.
If a witch is to be turned into a vampire or were-creature, etc, they are not considered a hybrid. Because of that, they get to keep their powers and also gain the other supernatural's ability. There are spells they can use for evil, but it's extremely discouraged, and some witches have turned in their family if they have become corrupted by power. Because of how much more common it is for witches to choose and have the ability live more discreetly than most other supernaturals, there is a rather small population of them at the school, possibly even rivaling merpeople for the least amount of their representative supernatural.
At the academy, witches are most commonly seeked out for teaching others to live in the human world. The witches that do decide to attend the academy as a student are typically given just about as many rules as the fae. Much, much more rarely than fae and fairies, they can inherit psychic powers.

Vampires are one of the few supernatural students that are thankful for the academy being underground, and Antarctica being dark half the year.
WITCHES
