Felix sat down across from Deimos in the cafeteria. “Hi big brother.” He signed.
Deimos looked up from his coffee, smiling to his little brother. “Hey Felix.” He said back, giving him a slight wave. “Why aren’t you in class?”
“It starts later for middle schoolers today.” Felix replied, looking up at his older brother.
“Lucky.” Deimos grumbled. He straightened up, fidgeting with his coffee mug. Since coming here, Felix’s English and sign language improved significantly, and frustratingly fast. He couldn’t really hold off this conversation any longer, even though if it weren’t for his conscience he’d probably tell these things to his brother the day before he and Rosalind left. “Listen, kid… Uh… I don’t even know where to begin with this but uh.. I have news.”
“Good news or bad news?” Felix asked, his face slightly mimicking what his reaction might be based of which one it was.
Deimos tried to think of how an eleven year old would view the things he wanted to tell him. “Uhhh… Neither, really?” He crinkled his nose, “Maybe bad?”
Felix sighed and rested his chin on his hand. “Go on.” He mumbled, but Deimos didn’t really catch his mutterings.
“Uh… I guess first I should let you know… those new teachers you’ve probably heard about? The married werewolf and vampire?”
“Oh, yeah. My friend Marcos says the werewolf class is really fun now that they have a new teacher. I guess the old one was practically a dinosaur…” He paused, looking to his older brother. “What about them?”
I don’t really know how to put this gently, he thought to himself before adding out loud, “They’re our parents.”
“They’re what?” The boy looked as shocked as he sounded. “No, that can’t be true. You would’ve told me…” He muttered.
Deimos sucked in a breath, lowering his head into his hands before running them through his hair, holding his hair back. “I know, and I should have. But they reacted so badly to my even being alive, I didn’t want you to face that same heartbreak.” He lowered his hands, scratching at the mug. “I should have told you as soon as I found out, and for that I’m sorry. But I really hope you won’t bring their attention to you either. They’re still really misguided about hybrids despite making two, and I don’t want you getting hurt… Especially when I won’t be here to protect you.”
Felix seemed alarmed, looking over Deimos’ person to see any signs of why he’d leave.
Deimos realized too late how that sounded and winced internally. “No, no, not like that. Rosie and I are leaving the school after this semester is over.”
Felix pouted.
“It’s not ‘cause I don’t want to be near you or anything, just Rosie has been getting severely bullied and quite honestly I’m tired of being here.”
Felix pouted more.
“I’ll still keep in touch. I swear. I promise. I’ll do better than I told you I usually do. We… we’ll uh… visit you for New Years.”
Felix’s pout intensified. “I’ll be in Germany. I promised mom and dad I’d be there.”
“Greece and a Germany aren’t on the other side of the world, you know. They’re even - surprise surprise - on the same continent.”
Felix whapped Deimos’ arm, not seeming to appreciate his brother’s sarcasm.
Deimos made a face as he got hit, snarling at his brother for a moment before calming himself down. “Rosie and I can rent a hotel so we don’t impose on your parents. I’m sure Rosalind would love the adventure.”
“Will you be able afford it?” Felix asked him, still pouting.
Deimos frowned, “hopefu-uhh… we should. We should be able to.” He said, hoping it sounded convincing.
Felix didn’t seemed convinced, but he let it go anyway. “So then you guys are leaving? I’ll be alone?”
Deimos squirmed a bit, when Felix put it that way, it sounded really bad. Like he was choosing a girl over his brother. He wasn’t, but at the same time, he knew if it hadn’t been for Rosalind, he would stay simply out of desperation to be needed by someone.
Which was more selfish than leaving for a girl, right? Right?
“No, I’ll still be in touch. I already told you, I promise.”
Felix was still pouting, chin in his hands. He was quiet for a bit before tapping the able to get Deimos’ attention. “So uh… did you find out what we are?”
“Hong Kongese…?” Deimos said hesitantly, not really sure of the proper term. He shrugged and looked to Felix, “but if you ask me, I’m still Greek.”
Felix finally grinned and gave his older brother a curt nod, “Then I am still German.”
Deimos took his little brother hand, wrapping their pinkies together. “I won’t leave you alone, Felix. I swear. I’m sorry that I’m leaving, but I don’t regret the decision. I’ll keep in touch.”
“And then when you and Rosalind have a place, I’ll come visit, da?” Felix asked cheekily.
“Uh… yeah, sure.” Deimos said, a bit hesitantly. He wasn’t sure when they’d be able to harbor a visitor, but if it was anyone, he was sure Rosalind would welcome Felix. “You can be our first visitor, if you want.”
