Annemarie sat in front of one of the computers in the back corner of the library, manicured hands folded across her chest. She didn't understand this technology. She didn't understand how it was useful, or how it worked, or what it was for. But one of her professors insisted the essay they had due before break be typed and printed, not hand written. Why couldn't she hand write it? Her penmanship was perfect, he would have no problems reading it. But he was adamant, and so Annemarie found herself in front of the stupid machine.
At the very least, she'd managed to get it turned on. But that was as far as she'd gotten. The pride in her refused to ask for help. It was better to sit there in confusion, being angry at everyone but herself. She knew she was being ridiculous, but she also knew people her "age" was supposed to be good at figuring out things like how to work a blasted computer.
She sighed. This was stupid.

Salem looked around the library's computer lab with a huff. This was what he got for stalling working on his finals until the last couple weeks of the semester. Both high schoolers and college students were dealing with finals, he really didn't know what he expected. At least he had the sense to bring his laptop and not expect a computer to be available. The only available spot was at the same table as a girl who, from what he could tell, was just staring blankly at the desktop. Finals did that to people, he supposed.
He kept a somewhat slight distance away from the girl, opening his laptop and going back to his coding program. He had decided to take a coding class as an elective, since it was available and it was something he actually liked. The final was to make a functional website, and he was about halfway done with his. He had spent the majority of the week focusing on his other finals, so he was a little behind on this one. He wasn't worried though. This was something he was actually good at. He stared at it for a moment, chewing a fingernail absent-mindedly, before continuing the code. He wanted the site to look special, stand out among the other students. His grades weren't terrible, but they were alarmingly average and he could use a boost in his GPA. He glanced to the girl one more time before looking back to his laptop. She seemed to need assistance, but he wasn't going to assume as such and he wasn't really the time to just offer it out of the blue.

This was stupid. Annemarie wasn't going to be able to figure this out on her own, that much was obvious. But her pride screamed for her not to ask for help. Sure she was well over 100 years old, but she still looked young. She looked like she should know how to use technology. "Ugh, father why couldn't you have kept up with the times?" She sighed under her breath.
After a few more minutes of glaring at the computer, Annemarie finally relented, looking around the library. It had a bit more traffic than it had when she'd gotten there. Her eyes fell on a boy sitting near her. He'd looked up at her before looking back at his laptop. He would be able to help, if he could operate the portable computer surely he could help her with this stupid thing.
Annemarie stood, walking over to him and standing just barely a foot away from him. "Excuse me." She started, fighting to keep the grimace from her face. "I was wondering if you would be able to assist me. I am unsure how to use the computer, and my professor seems to feel the need to make me type this essay instead of had writing it." She hated having to admit not understanding how to use the computer, but the idea of failing the assignment was even less appealing.

Salem looked up as the girl spoke to him. She was beautiful, he realized. He assumed she was probably a vampire, or one of the other species that lived far longer than really necessary. "Oh uh... Sure." He said slightly awkwardly, standing up slightly to scoot his chair closer to her. He looked at the computer, still showing the desktop. "Err... what exactly did you need help with?" He asked her.
He wasn't sure what he should expect as an answer, but he had a feeling this was going to play out like the time he was trying to show Aurelie's dad how to use a computer one time. He still didn't really get why a mermaid needed it, apparently it was something to do with contacting the school for something or other, but after he was done showing him how to even open the browser, he realized he had just gotten through the easiest part of that tutorial. He had decided that day mermaids really needed a form of communicating to others, mer-people or not, in some way that didn't involve a computer or phone.

Annemarie faltered at his question. She wasn't entirely sure what exactly it was she needed help with, nor did she know how to ask. Being at a loss for words was not something Annemarie was used to. "Well...I am not sure entirely. I have managed to get the computer on but I do not know what programs to use to write my paper." She resisted the urge to sigh, instead tucking a strand of hair behind her ear. She was surprised this boy was willing to help her. He must have had more important things to do than help a stranger with working simple technology.
Annemarie pulled out her assignment from her bag, pushing the paper towards the boy. "My teacher insists this be typed and I do not understand why, but I am not willing to get a poor grade due to something as small as not understanding computers." She looked back at his portable computer and then back at him. "Perhaps I should not have assumed you would be able to help. I mean...are these bigger computers the same as your smaller one over there?"

Salem raised an eyebrow, trying to casually hide a smile forming on his face. She must be a vampire, he thought to himself. He didn't know many other people that were that inept at technology. Not counting mer-people, of course, but he had a feeling he'd know her sooner than now. His eyes drifted to his laptop, then to the computer she had been at. "Uhh... no, they're not really any different. I can help you, if you'd like." He paused, glancing back at his laptop. "Do you uh... Do you know how to use a keyboard?"

Annemarie looked down at the object in question, her brows drawn in a frown. "I am sure I could figure it out. You just push the buttons right? They do not seem to be in alphabetical order though. How do you know where each letter is?" Annemarie was never one to ramble, but this was frustrating at best. She was glad the boy seemed so willing to help, but she really did not like how incompetent she must seem to him. Even though she was well over one-hundred years old, she still lived in modern day times and should be able to use these things.
"How is using this better than writing by hand?" She commented under her breath, not particularly talking to the boy. Whose name, she realized, she did not know. "My name is Annemarie. I suppose I should know you're name and you mine if you are willing to help me."

Salem tried to remember how he learned to use a keyboard. He was pretty young when he started spending time on a computer, and he knew his learning came at least partialy from school. "Uh.. You just kinda get used to it, I guess." He told her with a shrug. "Oh," He muttered as she introduced herself. Annemarie sounded like a vampire name. Whatever that meant. "I'm Salem." He said simply. If she was this inept with computers, at least she probably wouldn't make a Sabrina the Teenage Witch joke at him. The Salem Witch Trials, however, he wasn't as sure about. He wondered just how old she was. "I mean it's really not that..." His voice faded off. He had to stop dismissing his chance to hang out with pretty girls.

Annemarie frowned a bit. 'Getting used to it' didn't sound very helpful to her. She sighed, looking from the boy to the computer. "What am I supposed to write this paper on? Will something just pop up if I start pressing buttons?" Annemarie hovered her hand over the keyboard, running over the keys with her nails.
"Salem, hm?" It would be cruel if this boy turned out to be a witch. Annemarie couldn't tell what he was. He didn't smell like one of the animals, so he couldn't have been a Were. Unfortunately that left everything else to choose from. "Not that what?" Annemarie pressed, looking up at him again.

Salem took over the mouse, leaning over the back of Annemarie's chair, though keeping his distance from her still. "Uh... Here." He said simply, opening a new Word document for her. He took his hand off the mouse and gestured to it, "You can use this to click on things that you may need. Like, if you want to change the font, or need to look something up online, etc." He explained, hoping he was keeping it simple enough. He was trying to explain without making it sound like he was belittling her, and there was a fine line when it came to something he wasn't used to people in his (?) generation not knowing.

Annemarie blinked, looking from the program he just opened to the mouse he gestured to, and then stifled a sigh. "I do not understand." She said, twisting a bit to actually look at him. It surprised her that he was actually pretty cute, and she pushed the thought to the back of her mind. Her father would never approve.
"How do I get what I type here to my teach? Do I have him come to the library and open it here? How does it get from the computer to paper? None of this makes sense." Annemarie didn't realize she was firing off questions over and over. The more she thought about how absurd it all was the more it angered her.

Salem felt like he was on some hidden camera show. How long could someone live under a rock? Apparently a very long time. He stopped himself from looking around for the camera, or Aurelie to be somewhere giggling. He could let Merpeople get away with not knowing technology; the majority of it didn't work underwater and they weren't necessarily a species that found reason to go on land. But even an old vampire should know something about technology by now, right?
"Uh..." He began, trying to figure out where to even begin. He sat down in the chair next to her, letting out a sigh. "It's like uh... virtual paper. You type your report or whatever on here, then you can send it to your professor with your email." He paused. "Uh, you've probably never checked your school email, I take it?" He guessed. "Otherwise once you're done typing it, you can print it out and give it to your teacher that way." He explained to her.
