Kiyoshi's interest was peaked as she finally indulged a little about herself. "The time you were raised?" He questioned curiously. He tried to figure out what time that may be. 1800s? Early 1900s? "It seems a shame your family is stuck in time... They're aware it's a new millennium, right? Has been for 17 years." He let out a huff, he was suddenly thankful his parents, even though they were getting older, were like that. Maybe it was because they lived at the school, but they welcomed change. Maybe a little too much, his mind seem to think as it drifted back to memories of when they were first deciding to move out of the school for a while. It led to miserable years of bullying and eventually getting his wings cut off. He rolled his shoulders back, shifting his position so he was leaning back along the stairs. "I think maybe you'd be able to have more fun simply by letting yourself get with the times - err, assuming you aren't. You don't always have to follow the same path as your family, y'know?" He told her.
He let out a chuckle at her last comment. That was for sure, students never had respect for boundaries. It was part of what made him start using manipulation while in school, even though it was forbidden. He was also just angry at the world after losing his wings, but that was besides the point. Getting people to leave him alone as a student was one of his favorite activities. "Ya gotta be more assertive to get the other students to listen to you. You can't be a prim and proper young woman to get other students to listen to you. At least that's how my roommates were; I, obviously, have no idea how it works in the female dorms." That was somewhat of a lie, he'd snuck in and been snuck in a few times while he was still a student, but he didn't get a solid, clear glimpse of the hierarchy of the girl's dormitories.

"I was born in Romania in 1867." Annemarie told him, though she was sure her thick accent told that part very well. She was surprised he could understand her. Most people gave up after the first few sentences. She shrugged. Catching up with the times didn't seem that appealing. More and more she found herself missing Romania, even if she had less freedoms there than she did here. It was comfortable, familiar home. This was far out of her comfort zone. "My parents do not care about keeping up with the rest of the world. And I..." she trailed off, frowning. Never had she had such troubles forming words before. "It is what I know. What I am familiar with. I do not know how to have fun."
She smiled a bit at jis next comment. "I am sure that if I were to be assertive, students would never wish to talk to me." That was what she wanted though, right? To be left alone until she could go back home? Home to what? Home to more than likely another Mart prospect. Home to her parents expecting her to be like like siblings, get married and be a noticeable member of their society. To be obedient, follow without question. Was that really what she wanted? "I do not think I wish to be feared." She said softly, hesitantly as if unsure of her own words.

"Well that sounds like a pretty boring life to me." Kiyoshi told her honestly. "You're unfamiliar with fun but haven't you ever been curious about it?" He paused, backtracking as he waved a hand at her, "No, I'm sorry. I don't mean to pry... I've just... Never actually met anyone from the 1800s. Most of the vampires here are young, or just turned. I don't know very much about 1800s, let alone the 1800s in Romania. I'm just trying to understand..." He faded off. People's cultures manifested itself differently in different places, he knew this. Heck, he remembered being confused going just from China and Japan because there were so many differences in his two heritage countries. Europe and Asia were like comparing apples with hammers, not even oranges.
He looked to her again, the curiosity back in his gaze, "So then after you graduate, then what? Are you just going to return home and go back to living life in the 1800s with your family?"

"It is not that fascinating." Annemarie replied, though she was speaking from someone who'd grown up in that time. She supposed for someone who was looking in, it was interesting to study on. "Romania was not the worst place to grow up, but it was not that great either. We got a king late in the 1800s. Citizens did not have very many rights, and those who requested them were put to death. You did not have very many freedoms unless you were in the upperclass, which were few and far between. And even then if you were not a man you had no say. Being a vampire is even worse because we live for so long, most of the older ones are still stuck in their times."
At his next question Annemarie found herself once again unable to answer. It was something she hadn't though too extensively about. Her only goals had been to graduate as quickly as possible so she could return to the comfort of her home, but now she was unsure if she even wanted to do that. "I am...unsure. That had been my plan from the beginning. Leave here and return to what I know. But now...I do not think that is something I want. To go home and be forced into a marriage, continue to be unhappy as I was. As I am..."

She was a very curious person, Kiyoshi decided. His face fell a bit at her comment about staying in an unhappy life. "You know... Just because it's expected, either among family or culturally, doesn't mean you should go with it and stay unhappy." He sighed, he didn't keep Hane a secret really, but he didn't usually immediately disclose her existence, let alone to students. "I mean... I have a kid, but her mother and I just... couldn't make it work due to uh.. circumstances. I lived in Japan at the time... They really aren't big on separating and hell, we were getting pressured to go the opposite way of separation and get married. But we knew we'd be miserable, and our daughter would be miserable as a by product of that, so we went ahead and separated. Sometimes the decision to go against what you're obligated to, or in your case what you're used to, isn't easy." He shrugged, resting his chin in his hand as he leaned forward again. "I'm just saying, you don't have to stay here - well, once you've finished schooling you don't - but that doesn't mean you have to go home if it makes you that unhappy, either."

"You say that like it is easy to just change ones mindset that easily." Annemarie said, rubbing her fingers absentmindedly along the tattoo on her arm. The one time she'd rebelled against her parents had been when tattoos were fairly new in Romania, and she'd gone out to get two. Her hand moved to the one on her shoulder, remembering the pain of the beatings she'd gotten from her father. Going against tradition, as nice as it sounded, was something that terrified her.
She shook her head. "I do not have anywhere else I could go. Staying here is certainly out of the question. And going back home..." The more she thought about it, the more she realized she didn't want to go home. Familiarity or not, it wasn't worth it. She let out a sigh, lowering her forehead to her knees.

Kiyoshi shook a hand at her, "Oh no, no, that's wasn't my intention. Doing something different can be terrifying, especially when you don't know the outcomes. It's easy to fall into something comfortable rather than aim for change. But I mean... It's your life, not your parents... And you've got a very long life ahead of you still." He told her, shrugging. "Are you really going to let your family dictate what you do... literally forever?" He asked her.
He probably shouldn't be giving students advice on how to separate from their families. When students had families that were good to them, the school usually enforced familial relationships because they were so rare. But Kiyoshi, despite being from one of those good families, never understood the point of someone willing to be miserable just to appease others. Sure, he almost did it, but in the end, they both knew they wouldn't make it through marriage, even if only for Hane. And Hane was young now, but the set up still worked. And it was something that could keep working. If she began showing signs of any powers, then she could come here to him, and if she appeared to remain human, she could stay with her mom. Problem solved. There were more than enough kids of teachers at the school that if Hane came, she wouldn't (or shouldn't rather) feel too out of place. He brought himself back to the current topic at hand, "Is there anywhere you've always wanted to go? This school is a pretty good world country count, if you get what I mean, make friends, or heck, just start by saying hi, to someone from a country you want to go to, or eventually end up at. I've known plenty of classmates who ended up in a country halfway across the world from where they were born so they be closer to someone else." He suggested.

Annemarie stayed quiet for a bit. He didn't understand, he couldn't. He hadn't grown up as she did, with the family she had. He didn't just how deep they had their claws in her. "Getting away is nice in theory. But it is a lot harder than you think. My parents have dictated my every move, down to the classes I take here. They know when I am supposed to graduate, and they will more than likely be here the day I am supposed to leave to whisk me back to Romania." She could only defy them so long, eventually they would grow tired of it and force her to follow their wishes. It was how they'd always been.
At his question she shrugged, rubbing her fingers against her tattoo again. Anywhere she wanted to visit? She didn't know enough of anywhere outside of Romania to have a desire to visit. "I do not know how easily I could make friends. Or if I could make a good enough friend to want to live in their country with them." She said after a moment of thinking.

Kiyoshi stayed quiet, letting the words sit between them. They came from different backgrounds, clearly, obviously, there were things they'd never understand about each other. He sighed, resting his arms on his legs and leaning forward. "This is getting depressing. What do you like to do? Are there any classes - granted you're allowed to take them - that you really like or are really interested in?" He asked her curiously.

"My parents are not so controlling as to pick my classes for me. Sticking me in this school was enough." Annemarie sighed, looking up at him. She rested her head against the wall, stretching out her legs. "I do not know what it is I enjoy." She admitted after a moment of quite. "I only know what I am good at." Growing up as she did, she had to learn writing, languages, piano, drawing. She could sing and dance. But she wasn't sure if she actually enjoyed doing those things. She hadn't done them much since arriving at the school, at the very least. "I enjoy reading, but that is not much of a social activity. I have not attempted to do much in the way of fun since I have been here."
