Margaret George, the author's name was easily visible labeling the paperback cover of one of Braith Cadoc's favorite books. 'Mary, Queen of Scotland and the Isles' had been his first significant step into works of historical fiction, and in spite of his odd aversion to purely historical works, he'd taken quite quickly to the artful mix. Now, in his recent attempts to lessen the load of stress he often subjected himself to, he'd once more taken up the book. He'd set himself the task of re-reading one of his favorite books at least once a week, to allow him some time to de-stress by following the journey of a character he'd come to favor. A well-written tale was easy to immerse himself in, and few bothered him in the rather inconspicuous nook of the library he tended to occupy. He was comfortable here, in the expansive fiction area of the library, and the nerves seemed less prominent. The wave of concerns, worries, and fears lulled in the library, giving him some sense of calm. It didn't mean the stresses weren't there, they were simply quieter, more bearable. He'd been especially tense as of late, and particularly fretful with the news conveyed in his brother's previous e-mail. Even now, he found the worries to great to focus on the words on the page, words he'd read before, seemed to be little more than squiggles on a sheet of paper. How much longer would he stare blankly at the same page while he contemplated that which he couldn't control?
At the same time, guilt lingered under the surface, for the cause of all this latest stress was none other than his own siblings. From what he'd gathered from his brother's message, the twins had gotten into a fair deal of rather severe trouble, and Braith was well aware this wasn't the first time. However, in Trystan's last e-mail, he'd revealed that their father was preparing the twins to send them to the Academy, something that would mean a hellish time for Braith. The Cadoc twins neither liked, nor respected him, and they'd developed a reputation for being a bit too aggressive and hot-tempered. His previous meetings had been tense, albeit they'd only been five years old, he'd felt a significantly concerning amount of both hate and hunger from the two. Naturally, his inner deer had been exceptionally terrified at the moment, and had made even hugging them goodbye a difficult experience. In spite of what some rumored, he knew the twins weren't evil, but they were judgmental, and gave one the feeling of being poked by a mad scientist. Such things did not make for friendly associations in his mind, and he knew the semi-sanctuary of the Academy would be largely destroyed, at least for him, if the twins came. Wasn't it only natural then, that although his gaze skimmed the page, he wasn't truly seeing what was written. Rather, his heart spiked at the potential damages the twins could bring. Broken bookshelves, Antarctica in flames, the world ending. Truly, the scenarios were excessive, but Braith made it an unfortunate habit of assuming the worst. It was hard to stay grounded on what as right in front of him, and there was a tremble to his hands as his eyes briefly focused on a line, and his thumb nervously shifted the right side of the page.
"I shouldn't get myself so worked up..." He murmured to himself, but it didn't do much to calm the nerves.
@jinhai ; Apologies it's a bit rambling, next post will be neater.

Jinhai waltz the halls, trying to find something to do, readjusting his (glowing cat-ear) headphones. He was getting restless again, but he had to go and make the promise he wouldn't leave the academy again. Not until he graduated. It was going to be a long six years. Maybe he could convince his dad to let him graduate early; at the high school age rather than college age. He decided to see what, or even who, he could find in the library. for whatever reason, everyone he usually hung out with had disappeared before he even woke up. Surely they had to be somewhere in the vast expansion that was the school, but he couldn't find them. It was frustrating really. Hands in his pockets, he glanced the occasional book title as he looked around for familiar people. He didn't hang much in the library, not because he didn't like it, quite the contrary actually. He used the books he could to enhance his language skills. He just didn't frequent the library to hang out. He was growing frustrated; where the heck did everyone go? He felt he had to have wandered around the entire school by now. And he came across plenty of students, just none of the people he was actually close to.
He turned down another aisle and paused. "Jeez, finally." He muttered, going over to Cadoc. He lowered his headphones down to his neck, a Sia song leaking out just slightly, giving Cadoc a smile. "Wassup kid?" He asked, leaning against the wall by the boy. He slid down the wall until he was eye level with the younger boy, crouching with his arms on his knees. Jinhai gave Cadoc a curious look, "You look nervous... well, more than usual." He commented.

Realizing he'd been staring at the same page for quite some time, Cadoc quickly turned it as the scent of his vampire dorm-mate reached his senses, followed shortly after by the older vamp's voice. Looking up from the paper, he briefly considered putting away his book, but ultimately decided against it, figuring the book could still provide some use as a distraction. It's not exactly a calming experience to be stared at by a vampire, even one he knew well. He frowned at the questions, perhaps simply due to habit instead of actual displeasure. "Thanks, I really needed that input." He muttered, keeping his gaze on Jinhai, before finally directing his attention back towards the book briefly, simply for the sake of avoiding excessively awkward eye contact. "And anyway, there's nothing new with me being nervous. Just the usual." Cadoc himself hardly believed his own words, quick and with false spirit, hopefully he could change the subject to a more concerning matter however. In fact, he fixed another frown on his face, in spite of the fact that he'd grown rather fond of the calico. "Also, that cat of yours got out this morning when I left, I almost skinned my knee catching her. Can't you put her up at night? The last thing I'm in the mood for when I leave is having to chase Rawr down the halls." His nerves were starting to speed up his words, and he drummed his fingers on the cover of the book in spite of having yet to put it down. So much for the library being a place to calm down, he was already starting to bite his lip with the prospect of having to converse with another human, er, being. Living in close quarters with Jinhai had erased the most prominent flight instincts, but it didn't fully prevent his various anxieties.

Jinhai kept a playful smile on his face, "No problem," he quipped. He then nodded, "sure, if you say so." He told him, amused by the boy's insistence on being his usual self. His eyes drifted to Cadoc's book, about to ask about it when he spoke first. He contemplated his answer for a moment before shrugging, "I don't really know where I can put her that she won't be able to get out of, though. Maybe the bathroom?" He thought aloud. His eyes again drifted to the book, noticing his fidgeting. "I don't know, Cadoc, you really seem more nervous than usual." He said again, moving to actually sit down, crossing his legs. "C'mon man, you can tell me if something's wrong, you know that... right?" He said, looking to the boy as he looked for confirmation, biting his lip slightly.

In spite of himself, Cadoc tensed as Jinhai adjusted his position. 'Looks like he plans on sticking around, wonderful.' His thoughts grumbled, realizing that he wouldn't get back to reading his book for awhile, and that he'd have to stop avoiding the subject of his nerves. Cadoc normally didn't mind the other boy's company compared to others, but he always got especially irritable when he was stressed out like this. Sighing out loud, he closed the book with a fair amount of dismay and set it down next to him. His shoulders sagged as he let his posture flag, dropping the stiff and fake confidence. He paused after Jinhai's last sentence, before finally speaking with the stress and exhaustion tensing his words. "You already know I'm not exactly on close terms with most of my family," he paused, "The twins are going to be coming to Otherworld, and they..." The revulsion he felt directed towards him whenever he'd spent time with the twins wasn't exactly something he knew to put into words. It was as though they thought of him as only prey, and that he belonged nowhere near them, almost as though they believed the pack itself was threatened by his existence. "Distinctly hate me." He finished weakly, feeling rather uncomfortable that his nerves and fear stemmed from his own siblings. A joyless laugh briefly punctuated his sentence, as he ran his fingers through his hair, nervously pushing it back.

Jinhai was a bit surprised Cadoc opened up so quickly, maybe it was just in his mind, but he felt like he usually had to fight him a bit to get him to open up. He let out a long sigh after Cadoc mentioned the twins were coming, and mimicked Cadoc's action, running a hand through his own hair. "Well..." He began, "They'll be in separate dorms, and separate classes. I know it doesn't always seem like it, but it is pretty easy to avoid people here. I do it with my dad all the time... And I'm in one of his classes." He brought up a hand and tapped his chin, "If the twins cause too much trouble, the headmaster will surely do something about it... But if they start pestering you, they can respond to me." He said simply.
He had a feeling Cadoc wouldn't take him seriously with that offer, but he was completely serious. No matter how odd it was that his dorm mate was a were-deer, he honestly found it somewhat endearing (pun intended?) and grew to really like the kid. However, he also knew in Cadoc's mind, even to Jin he was prey. His tongue ran along his teeth subconsciously. Hopefully one day he'd be able to convince the boy he wasn't his target. At least not in terms of food.

Jin's reassurances quelled little of his worries, though a soft laugh did come in response to the vampire's final statement. "How noble of you, Prince Charming." He joked, not thinking much of the offer. "I doubt it'll do much though, if the twins decide to target me they'll make sure they can do it. The whole reason they're getting sent here is because they managed to travel all the way to the London Eye, and then shifted while riding it." He shuddered at the thought, though he knew no one had been directly harmed by the twins actions. Cadoc knew he was overreacting a bit, but he wasn't sure what else to do. It seemed like an impossible downhill battle. It would be best to just stop thinking about it, he knew, but doing so was difficult. 'I might as well try.' He thought dryly, figuring an abrupt subject change would be necessary. Perhaps he could bring up the cat again?

Jinhai sat up straight, trying to present himself with an air of royalty, but he ended up laughing instead. "Only for you, I guess." He joked. He raised an eyebrow, "That's some intense stuff there... and they're aware some people have killed supernaturals for less than that, yeah?" He asked, surprised that any supernatural would expose themselves like that, kids or not. He was pretty sure from the minute he was born, his parents were teaching him to hide the fact he was a vampire. He noticed the boy was still kind of twitchy, like his comment didn't really settle his nerves and he sighed. He supposed it was time to change the subject, so he pointed to the book, "What book is it?" He asked simply.

Cadoc scowled, and managed a gruff nod in response to Jinhai's question pertaining supernaturals. He knew the twins were perfectly aware of their actions, but they seemed to sneer at everything and believe they were invincible. It was absolutely ridiculous. He blinked suddenly, too focused on his own thoughts when Jin asked about his book and he sighed a little at his own jitters. "It's 'Mary, Queen of Scotland and the Isles.', one of my favorites." He added with a frown. Even his favorite things didn't seem to be able to hold a smile on his face. "Did you come here for a book?" He tested, not sure of the answer himself. He rarely saw Jin in the library, so he'd been caught off guard when the vamp had come across him. Cadoc supposed it wasn't a crime to enjoy the library, but surely Jin had better places to hang around and be a chatty vamp. Like, anywhere. Cadoc was not exactly a fun person to be around, he knew that, and he knew that his nerves would either make him spill all his thoughts or become a snippy and rude conversation partner. Jin didn't seem to hate him, but Cadoc figured that would change if he talked enough.

Jinhai nodded, "Interesting. I think I've read that before..." He couldn't remember, but he had read a lot while he was in Europe, because reading helped him learn languages better. All the books started to blend together after 100 years worth of them. "Hmmm? No, not really. I was just looking for familiar people, it feels like everyone's up and disappeared." He said with a frown. "And then I found you, although it seems like you'd rather I disappeared." He said, trying to take it lightly. He knew the boy had anxiety issues, he was pretty sure someone would have to be blind to not notice. He stopped taking offense a while ago, but feeling a bit hurt, after he hadn't done anything to provoke the were-deer, or at least not to his knowledge, made it a bit saddening. Especially considering... He took his mind away from that thought, it'd be a while before he could even think of confessing to the kid. Being able to spend more than a few minutes with him in the general vicinity would probably be a good start. He sighed, not even realizing he was pouting.

'In other words, you couldn't find the cool kids and stumbled across your wreck of a dorm mate.' The thought was laced with self-loathing, but Cadoc avoided openly voicing his opinion. It seemed to be the right choice, given the vamp's next sentence which caught Cadoc off guard. Was it so obvious he wanted to be alone? Did he? He knew he came off as disparate, but he'd thought it was slightly better around Jinhai. The sigh that followed the vamp's statement struck Cadoc by surprise too, and he blinked in confusion. Regardless, the words seemed to have distracted Cadoc to focusing more on the now. He knew he should apologize, so he attempted to do so, in his awkward, quick-nature of run-on sentences. "Sorry, Jin. I'm just tense, and confused right now, I know I'm not great at the whole friend thing, I thought I'd been getting better." He knew he had, but 'better' for him was 'socially functional' and that didn't equate to much. Damn, was he really that much of an ass? 'It's a wonder anyone can hang out with me.' His thoughts snarked internally, while outward he mumbled, hearing the slightest traces of his long-abandoned accent slipping through. "I'm real sorry, it's been a tough day." 'Excuses.'

Jinhai perked up a bit, surprised the boy apologized. Then again, he'd probably never been given a apology previously because he's never been so blunt about it. He had to admit he felt a bit sorry for the kid. "Hey, no need to apologize, you got some pretty stressful news today." He said, giving the boy a smile. He paused, ruminating on something before sucking in a breath and holding it for a few seconds, "You know." He began. "You're a pretty good friend, whether you have anxiety or not. I don't really care. People deal with things in their own way, but I hope you know you can always come to me if something's bothering you." He told Cadoc. He looked to him and gave him a soft smile, "In a deer's mind I may be a predator for you sometimes, but I promise, I'm on your side."

'I suppose I really should start trying to be a bit nicer, he returned the vamp's smile with a tired, but happier one, 'Jinhai's a really nice guy, I shouldn't be rude to someone when I live with them anyway.' Maybe if he started to relax more in his own room, it would help to relieve some of the other anxieties he'd feel throughout the day. Jinhai's final sentence allowed him to relax a little more, though it was more so because he figured the guy was just trying to make him feel better. Cadoc didn't think the promise was serious, but he smiled anyway. Even if it was just words, it made him feel better. He knew Jin had never really tried to eat him or anything, and while that could quell some of his worries, he still was plagued with the tragic uncertainty of what-if's. It was always better to just not think about things, else his mind would wander to the darker paths. 'Change the subject.' "Thanks, always good to know I've got a scary vampire with me. Are you hungry by the way? I haven't eaten dinner yet."
Well, no one said Cadoc was smooth at changing the subject. How many times had he done that during this conversation? A lot.

Jinhai watched Cadoc, trying to get a read on him again, but this time it didn't really work. It was easy to read him when he was anxious, he showed very cleared signs. The fact he somewhat stopped showing them was a bit relieving, but he still wasn't good on guessing the other boy's emotions when it wasn't anxiety. Without intending to, he let out a soft, amused laugh at the comment about dinner. Clearly the kid was still nervous, even if it had been lessened by his words. "I'm not really super hungry, but I could go for a dessert, so I will join you." He said, the smile still on his face. He stood up, stretching before offering his hand to Cadoc to help him up if he wanted it, but kept it subtle enough he didn't have to feel blown off if Cadoc didn't accept it.

Feeling just a tad more confident now that he'd steered the conversation in a different direction, Cadoc picked up his book as Jinhai stood and stretched. When Jin extended his hand to him, Cadoc didn't think much of any possible connotations to the motion, and accepted the vampire's hand, though he didn't hold on any longer than was necessary. Instead, his focus was on what they might be able to get from the cafeteria today. The dinner options usually weren't to his taste, though, although sometimes the deserts were decent. "One second," he murmured, distractedly returning the book to its nearby spot, then blinking up at Jin. "If you don't mind not going to the cafeteria, I think I still have some stuff in the fridge, and I'm sure I'll be able to put together a dessert too." Desserts weren't quite his forte, so he wouldn't be surprised if Jin suffered a bit. He grinned a little at the thought, feeling his nervousness fade away a little more as his somewhat wicked side showed. Banana snickerdoodles would be easy enough to make, though he was pretty sure he needed vanilla extract, and happened to be out of that.
